At MJ Driver, a question we get asked all the time at from patients who are preparing for laser is “What is the best numbing cream for tattoo removal?”
Non-prescription numbing creams are sold over the counter at pharmacies and usually contain a combination of ingredients such as lidocain, benzocain, camphor or menthol. These ingredients work to either deaden the nerve endings or provide natural soothing sensations that help prepare your skin for anything painful.
Unfortunately, there’s no one cream that’s going to be “better” or “worse” when preparing you for your laser session, as it all depends on how your body reacts to the cream and how successfully you’ve applied it!
The most important thing to do before choosing a numbing cream is to speak to your doctor or pharmacist, to make yourself aware of any potential side effects or reactions that may occur.
Once you’re good to go and have chose a numbing cream, make sure you read the instructions! All creams are different, and have various waiting times before the numbing action kicks in. You’re going to want to apply the cream at the right time leading up to your appointment so that it hasn’t already worn off when we get started on the laser removal, or yet to kick in. We will remove any cream you’ve applied prior to starting your laser session, but if you’ve applied the product properly, this shouldn’t be a problem.
If you’re not sure which cream is going to work the best for you, consider trying a couple out before your appointment so that you’re fully prepared.
All clinicians at MJ Driver have had laser removal themselves and know what it’s like to be in the hot seat. This is why we all use advanced air cooling systems during and after your laser treatment to help ease any soreness you might be experiencing.
At the end of the day, the amount of discomfort you may experience during treatment will all be forgotten when your tattoo is successfully removed, or lightened for that perfect cover up. No pain no gain!
